Glutathione

Glutathione

Also known as L-Glutathione, this powerful antioxidant is composed of three amino acids: cysteine, glycine, and glutamic acid. Found in every cell of the body, glutathione plays a vital role in numerous essential processes, including mitochondrial function, DNA production, and the removal of toxins, such as mercury, from the brain and other cells. Unlike most antioxidants, glutathione can be synthesized in the liver, although its levels naturally decline with age and can be affected by factors like stress, malnutrition, and environmental toxins.

Key Functions:

  • Supports immune function and metabolism.
  • Assists in tissue building, repair, and sperm cell formation.
  • Plays a crucial role in enzyme activation.
  • Removes toxins from cells and crosses the blood-brain barrier to detoxify the brain.
  • Reduces oxidative stress caused by free radicals, helping to protect against aging and degenerative illnesses.
  • Aids the liver in metabolizing alcohol and reducing belly fat storage.

Potential Benefits:

  • Improves psoriasis and skin complexion.
  • Protects liver cells in alcoholic and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
  • Enhances insulin sensitivity in older adults.
  • Boosts mobility for individuals with peripheral artery disease.
  • Reduces symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and autoimmune disorders.
  • Mitigates complications from uncontrolled diabetes.
  • Relieves symptoms of respiratory illnesses.

Supplementation:
Although glutathione is found in foods like spinach and avocados, it is poorly absorbed when consumed orally. Supplements such as curcumin, N-acetylcysteine, selenium, silymarin, vitamin C, and vitamin E can help support its production.
